Sophie's Christmas - a traditonal nativity

<<Back

Bethlehem is overflowing, all the hotels are full. The Roman soldiers are organising the census, people are crowding into the city from miles around and the Inn owners are rushed off their feet.

The play follows the fortunes of Sophie, a young girl who has been separated from the group she came with, and a couple, Mary and Joseph, who have struggled in from Nazareth.

Wherever she goes in the town, she finds no warmth or welcome. She is turned away from camp fires and from an inn where the publican is only interested in paying-over-the-top guests.

We follow the soldiers as they go out onto the hills to count the shepherds, and we stay with the publican who is making so much money, he is planning his summer holidays already.

The play ends with Mary and Joseph ensconced in the stable, then visited by Sophie, the shepherds and the Wise Men.

There are just two songs specially written, so there are opportunities for Christmas Carols of your choice to be added to the play.
